Fall/spring CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
Mommy and Me Classes (Ages 18 mo-3.0 years):
Mommy and Me – 45-minute long class. Students must have a participating adult in each class. Classes consist of creative movement, beginner ballet, basic tumbling, and fun exercises to develop motor skills. This class utilizes imagination, fun props, and toddler-friendly music to facilitate learning. Ask us about special Mommy and Me pricing!
Combination Classes:
Combination classes provide an introduction to Tap, Ballet, Tumbling or Jazz techniques for dancers with limited experience in at least one of the above genres. Tap dancing focuses on creating rhythm and sound through the use of the feet. Ballet focuses on graceful, controlled movements at the barre, across the floor, and center floor. Tumbling is similar to gymnastics “floor” work, while Jazz is a faster-paced opportunity for dancers to utilize isolations, leaps, turns, and style.
First Steps – 45-minute long class, each week includes Tap, Ballet, and Tumbling. Ages 2.5-4 years. Students learn beginner ballet, tap, and tumbling skills in this exciting, active class. Dancers use a variety of props and toddler-friendly music to facilitate learning.
Steppin’ Up – 1 hr. class, each week includes Tap, Ballet, and Tumbling. Ages 4-5 years. Students start in Tap shoes and will change into Ballet shoes in the classroom.
Steppin’ Up 2- 1 hr. class, each week includes Tap, Ballet, and Tumbling. Ages 6-7 years. Students start in Tap shoes and will change into Ballet shoes in the classroom. Level 2 will move at a much quicker pace than Level 1 and will require greater body control and focus.
Dance Debut – 1 hour 15 minute class. 7-9 year olds. This class is an introduction to Tap, Ballet, and Jazz techniques for dancers with little experience in at least one of the above genres.
Ballet:
Ballet is a classical art form with a long history dating back to the 15th century. Ballet consists of graceful, controlled movements and specific terminology for all body positions and movements. As the building block to all other styles of dance, we believe a good ballet foundation is essential to students’ growth as dancers. As such, all combination classes will include ballet technique.
Level 1 Ballet – 1hr. class. Dancers ages 9+ or with Teacher Approval.
Level 2 Ballet – 1hr. class. Dancers ages 10+ or with Teacher Approval.
Level 3 Ballet – 1hr. class. Dancers ages 12+ or with Teacher Approval.
Level 4 Ballet – 1hr. class. Dancers ages 14+ or with Teacher Approval.
Ballet Tech – 1 hr. class. Dancers ages 12+ or with Teacher Approval. This is an advanced ballet class.
Pre-Pointe – 45 minute class. Teacher Approval required, dancers in this class must take the Level 6 Ballet and one additional ballet class. This is a preparatory class for future pointe work and does not include pointe shoes.
Pointe – 45 minute class. Teacher Approval required, dancers in this class must take the preceding Ballet Tech class and one additional ballet class. This is an advanced ballet class.
Teen/Adult Ballet – 1 hr. class. This class is designed for adults and older teens with limited experience.
Intro to Ballet/Lyrical – 45 minute class. Ages 8-11 years. This is an introductory class for students to learn ballet and lyrical techniques. Lyrical is a fusion of ballet and jazz techniques set to slower paced music.
Jazz:
All Jazz classes at Dorothy Keck Dancers are 1 hour long, with the exception of Adult Jazz and Intro to Jazz. Jazz dance stems from ballet technique and utilizes isolations, and stylized, fast-paced movements. Dancers will learn various leaps, turns, and combinations throughout the year. We strongly recommend all jazz dancers take ballet class as well.
Intro to Jazz – 45 minute class. Ages 8-11 years. This class is designed for students with little-no experience in Jazz.
Level 1 Jazz – Ages 9+ years or with approval.
Level 2 Jazz – Ages 10+ years or with approval.
Level 3 Jazz – Ages 11+ years or with approval.
Level 4 Jazz – Ages 12+ years or with approval.
Adult Jazz – 45 minute class. Ages 20+ years. This fun class utilizes Jazz technique in a low-impact setting. Most dancers in this class have previous dance experience. Adult Jazz participates in our annual recital.
Tap:
All Tap classes are Dorothy Keck Dancers are 45 minute long. Tap dancing focuses on creating rhythm and sound through the use of the feet. This class is great for dancers’ musicality and coordination! Tap dancing as we know it today began in the United States in the 1900s, taking its roots from African tribal dances, English clogging, and Irish jigs.
Level 1 Tap – Ages 9+ years or with approval.
Level 2 Tap – Ages 10+ years or with approval.
Level 3 Tap – Ages 12+ years or with approval.
Level 4 Tap – Ages 13+ years or with approval.
Adult Tap – Ages 20+ years. This tap class is open to all levels, though most dancers in this class have some type of previous dance experience. The Adult Tap class meets every week throughout the Fall/Spring Session and participates in our Annual Recital.
Hip Hop:
Hip Hop is an extremely popular dance style seen frequently in music videos and live performances across the world. With roots in urban New York, Hip Hop dance technique is constantly evolving and changing and Dorothy Keck Dancers is here to keep your dancer in the know!
Bitty Bop – 45-minute class, Hip Hop and Tumbling. 3-4 year olds. Typically consists of 30 minutes of Hip Hop and 15 minutes of tumbling each week. Dancers will learn hip hop skills and popular dances like the dougie, dab, etc. and fundamental Hip Hop techniques.
Shake It Up! – 45-minute class, Pre-Hip Hop and Tumbling. 4-5 year olds. This class is great for high-energy dancers! In Shake It Up! we rely heavily on the use of props and creative music to facilitate learning. Dancers will learn basic hip hop and tumbling movements and techniques.
Move It! – 45-minute class, Hip Hop and Tumbling. 6-7 year olds. Typically consists of 30 minutes of Hip Hop and 15 minutes of tumbling each week. Dancers will learn hip hop skills and popular dances like the dougie, dab, etc. and fundamental Hip Hop techniques.

Level 4 Hip Hop – 1 hr. class. Teacher approval only.
Contemporary Hip Hop – 45 min. class. This class is a fusion of hip hop, jazz, contemporary, and lyrical techniques. We recommend dancers take other styles of dance (such as jazz or ballet) in conjunction with this class.
Acro:
Acro (short for Acrobatics or Acro Dance) is similar to “floor” work in gymnastics. Because Acro has a dance-focus, some techniques will vary between Acro and Gymnastics. Students will learn various acrobatic techniques such as cartwheels, back handsprings, aerial cartwheels, and partnering tricks. Exceptional focus is required for these classes, class will include strengthening each week.
Foundations of Acro – 1 hr. class. 6+ year olds. This is a beginner level Acro class, students are not expected to have any prior Acro experience in this class. This class focuses on building flexibility and strength and will include acrobatic stunts and tumbling as strength and flexibility increase.
Acro 1/2A –1 hr. class. Must be approved by an instructor prior to enrollment. Students should be able to go down and recover from their backbends, execute a backbend kick-over or walkover and a front limber with minimal-no assistance. Students coming into this class should have straight legs on cartwheels and handstands. Students are strongly encouraged to take Ballet or Jazz class in conjunction with Acro 1.
Acro 2B/3 –1 hr. minute class. Must be approved by an instructor prior to enrollment. Students should execute basic-intermediate acro skills with control, straight legs and pointed toes. Students should have knowledge of intermediate acrobatic terminology and show efficient strength and flexibility to perform more advanced skills such as back and front handsprings, front and side aerials and more. Dancers are not expected to have these skills mastered prior to entry to class, but should be physically prepared to work on these skills. Students are strongly encouraged to take Ballet or Jazz classes in conjunction with Acro 2. Strong focus on strength gaining and flexibility.
Other Classes:
Contemporary/Modern – 1 hr. class. Ages 12+ or with permission. Contemporary is a constantly evolving genre that incorporates jazz, ballet, and modern techniques. This class is designed for advanced dancers who want to explore different types of movement and artistry.
Strength and Flexibility – 45 minute long class. Ages 8+. This class focuses on fitness, conditioning, stretching, and building muscles and coordination required for dance. Great for dancers looking to try out for high school or college dance teams, students looking to make improvements in their technical performance, increase endurance, and those looking for a challenging but rewarding class that will make you sweat!
Dance Team Prep – 1 hr. class. Ages 11+. This class is designed for dancers hoping to join a high school or college dance team. Class will focus heavily on turn, leap, and kick techniques. Dancers are not expected to have previous dance experience, though previous dance experience helps. This class participates in our Annual Recital. We highly recommend dancers take Teen/Adult Ballet or another Ballet class in conjunction with Dance Team Prep.
Dance Team Technique – 1 hr. class. Ages 11+ years. This class is designed for dancers hoping to join a high school or college dance team. Class will focus heavily on turn, leap, and kick techniques. Dancers are not expected to have previous dance experience, though previous dance experience helps. This class DOES NOT participate in our Annual Recital.
DKDC Technique and Rehearsals – Varying time. Exclusively available to members of the Dorothy Keck Dance Company, a competitive team of dancers ages 5-11 years old. Members are chosen through an open audition in the summer. More information about the DKDC is available here.
Turn Up Krew Rehearsals – Varying time. Exclusively available to members of the DK Turn Up Krew, a team of hip hop dancers ages 10-18 years old. Members are chosen through an open audition in the summer. More information about the Turn Up Krew is available here.
