Recital FAQ’s
We understand recitals have a lot of details. Over the years we’ve assembled a list of frequently asked questions to assist you in finding the answers you need!
Is Recital participation mandatory? Recital participation is optional, although we encourage dancers to perform as part of their training and growth. If a dancer will not be participating an “opt-out” form must be filled out by Saturday, November 9th. After this date auto pay for costumes and participation fees is set up.
Any dancer not participating in recital may continue in their regular classes. They are not excluded from class, but may be put to the side or back of formations to help other students understand their positioning for the stage. Any student not participating in the recital will be notified the before dress rehearsal week and will be offered a makeup date.
What does my costume fee(s) include? The cost includes the costume, accessories, and steaming if needed. Dancers/Parents are responsible for proper shoes, tights, hair, and makeup.
Can I get a refund for my child’s costume? Unfortunately, we are unable to refund any costume fees. If a dancers chooses not to continue Dorothy Keck Dancers reserves the right to purchase the costume back for another dancer to use.
Can my child begin classes mid-season? Yes! Please note our dance curriculum is progressive throughout the season. Elements and combinations taught during the fall season are then incorporated into the routines taught throughout the spring season We recommend students begin attending dance classes as early as possible within the annual season. Our classes utilize teaching assistants to help all students.
When and where are dress rehearsal and recital? Our recital is held at the Lila Cockrell Theatre in downtown San Antonio. Dress rehearsals are May 17-23 in the studio. A detailed schedule is available in around late April-May.
Is Dress Rehearsal mandatory? Yes. Dress rehearsal is mandatory to give all dancers the opportunity to rehearse with their entire class prior to the recital.
How long does recital last? We typically will have two shows that will be approximately two to three hours in length with no intermission. With live shows routines are not set to perform at certain times. As a dance community we ask the audience to stay for the entirety of the show as all our dancers showcase their hard work and progress from the season.
Does my child leave after they dance at recital? Dancers are required to stay for the duration of the show. Our finale showcases each student with bows, confetti and dancing to celebrate! Parents may pick up their dancers after finale. Finale is full of fun and a way of celebrating the completion of the show and hard work of all involved! Please stay to support our other dancers for the completion of the show.
Do I need to purchase tickets for recital? General admission is FREE, no tickets needed! Invite as many family and friends as you’d like. Seating is not assigned, we recommend arriving early to get your seats. VIP Tickets with guaranteed seating is available.

What is VIP Seating? Our VIP seating are the best seats in the house! There are two tiers of seating ranging from $15-$20 per ticket. Vip tickets guarantee reserved seats in prime locations, provide priority seating to help you beat the crowd, and come with a complimentary SWAG BAG full of gifts, incentives and offers.

When do costumes go home? Recital costumes go home in classes before dress rehearsal. Your account must have a zero balance before your child’s costume goes home.
How does my child wear their hair for recital? Costume instructions including hair and makeup will be distributed in our second recital packet along with dress rehearsal schedule, and show assignments in the Spring.
If my child is in more than one routine, who will help them change? Each year we ask for Stage Mom volunteers to chaperone classes backstage. We ask parents of students to help dancers feel comfortable and to have chaperones who are familiar with the classes age group. Stage moms help with the necessary backstage changes in the dressing rooms.
Can my child have snack backstage? No. The Lila Cockrell does not allow food or drinks backstage, aside from water. Dancers should never eat or drink with their costumes on.
Is there class the week of dress rehearsal or recital? No. Our last week of classes is the week of May 12-16. Dress rehearsals are May 17-23 in place of classes. Our studio staff will be working to prepare props, signage, and all the supplies necessary for performance day May 24-30. Makeup classes for dancers not participating in recital will be May 5th-10th.
Being a Stage Mom is one of the most important roles at our recital. All classes will need at least one “stage mom”. We ask for studio moms to volunteer due to their experience with children of the class’s specific age, and to help dancers feel more comfortable with a friendly face.
What are the responsibilities of a Stage Mom? Stage Moms are the supervisors and assistants to their assigned class in the dressing room at Recital. Stage Moms make sure that all students have the appropriate costume, hair, makeup, tights, shoes, and accessories before guiding students backstage. Stage Moms are required to stay in the dressing rooms or backstage with their assigned class for the duration of our recital performance. Stage Moms for younger classes should assist students in using the restroom.
Helping Students Onstage A Stage Mom will be informed by a member of Dorothy Keck Dancers staff when she needs to collect her class and guide students backstage to wait for their turn to perform. It is the responsibility of the Stage Mom to ensure all students are present. Once backstage, Stage Moms should line students up in their performance order and help us keep students calm and quiet backstage. When it is time for the class to perform, Stage Moms will assist teachers in getting students onto the correct “tape” and in their places for their performance (younger classes only).
Stage Moms will be invited into the classroom the last 3 lessons to learn how to walk students out on stage. This is also used for all students to become acquainted with the adults who will be assisting during the performance (younger classes only).
Watching Your Student Perform Stage Moms will be allowed to watch the class in which they are assigned from the wings backstage. Stage Moms will not be allowed into the audience for any reason. To avoid confusion backstage and in the dressing rooms, we ask Stage Moms that have a child performing in multiple routines stay with her assigned class, rather than “floating” backstage and in different dressing rooms with her child.
Why Be A Stage Mom? Stage Moms are the glue that holds our recital together! Without Stage Moms we would be unable to run a timely, organized, and professional recital. We understand that being a Stage Mom is a sacrifice and want to show our Stage Moms our appreciation for their hard work. Any mom who agrees to be a Stage Mom and abides by our guidelines (arriving on time, staying with her assigned class, ensuring all students are prepared for stage) will receive a $25 credit to use towards Fall 2025 registration. Credits become active when you register by our Fall/Spring 2025-2026 season by August 9, 2025. Credits will be applied to your October 2025 tuition.
Performance Day is a fast-paced and thrilling event! Drawing from our experience, here is some valuable information for dancers preparing to perform at the recital and for parents to understand what to anticipate on the big day.
Arrival: Upon arrival, kindly follow our signage to reach your dressing room. Our staff will be available to assist you throughout the process. Please note that dancers are not permitted in the auditorium. Ensure that you arrive in your first costume with hair and makeup done. For dancers with multiple performances, changing facilities are available in the dressing room area. Remember to bring a cover-up to protect your costume while waiting for the show to start.
Backstage Safety & Finale: Dancers and Stage Moms are required to stay backstage throughout the entire show. All students must stay until the end since every student takes part in our grand finale. Each student will stay with their designated Stage Mom for the entire duration of the show. Mommy & Me and Just Me classes will have a reduced time frame to remain backstage.
Photos & Videos: Cameras or recording devices are prohibited in the theater, dressing rooms, and backstage during the recital to protect the dancers’ privacy. Professional video downloads and access to professional photography will be provided to parents via email. Sit back and enjoy the show!
Multiple Shows: In the past, we have hosted multiple shows on Recital Day. Show assignments will be determined after spring break and shared once they are finalized. Both siblings and individual dancers may participate in more than one show. Families, including those with dancers in multiple shows, will have access to video downloads at no additional charge.
Classes: The last day of classes is on Friday, May 23rd (dress rehearsal). DKD admin will be in the office from May 24th to 30th to prepare for the show day. Withdrawal is not required after May for the 2024-2025 Fall/Spring Season. Summer marks a new session that necessitates re-enrollment. Class recommendations will be sent via email once the summer schedule is finalized.
Classes will start learning recital choreography after winter break. Consistent attendance is crucial to a dancer’s affect on stage. Help to give our dancers the opportunity to have the utmost confidence and preparation for their performance.
Fall Semester: Throughout the Fall Semester, dancers will focus on enhancing their technique and skills. Instructors will monitor the progress of each class to create choreography for the recital routine. Dancers are encouraged to attend classes consistently to improve their skills and technique over the season.
Spring Semester: Following the winter break, classes will start practicing their recital routines. Parents are allowed to take videos from outside the lobby windows and can also film when invited into the classroom by our instructors. You are encouraged to capture the routine choreography through the windows!
Makeup Classes: Make-up classes are encouraged but limited to the schedule and class space. The Studio does not pro-rate or make adjustments for missed classes. Students may be able to make up classes missed (due to illness or injury) within the same month the class was missed. Make-up classes are not guaranteed and are only available for classes with equivalent class options that have space available. Students with past-due balances waive all privleges to make up classes and any performance opportunities. Only one make-up class is allowed per calendar month and only at the discretion of studio administration.
Dress Rehearsal: Saturday May 17-Friday May 23
Dress Rehearsal will take place at the Studio in full hair & makeup with their costume for dress rehearsal week!
What is dress rehearsal like? Participating in the dress rehearsal is COMPULSORY and requires full costume and makeup. Students are expected to arrive in their first performance attire. Dancers with multiple routines scheduled on the same day will change costumes in designated studio dressing areas. These changing studios will be kept private from the viewing area.
Why is dress rehearsal mandatory? Dress Rehearsal is a crucial moment where all students come together to rehearse their routine. Missing this practice not only impacts individual students but also affects their classmates. Additionally, it provides dancers with the opportunity to rehearse in their costumes, complete with hair and makeup, just as it will be on the day of the show. Participating in dress rehearsal is essential for dancers to familiarize themselves with what show day will entail.
Dress Rehearsal Timing: Dress Rehearsal scheduling is the same day as your normal class, and within 15-20 minutes of the normal start time. Performers need to arrive 15 minutes before their scheduled call time. As a reminder, we run an organized and timely dress rehearsal. After your dancer performs, you are free to leave (dress rehearsal only). All dancers must change out of costumes before leavng the Studio. We want costumes to stay in tip-top shape for performance day!
Do parents watch dress rehearsal? YES! Parents are welcome to take as many photos and videos as they wish during dress rehearsal. There will also be a professional photographer at the studio for Dance Portraits to purchase. We plan to have our friendly photographer here May 16 &17.
DKD Alumni and Parent/student duos are invited to DKD’s Sapphire Production routine!
What is the Sapphire Production routine? Our Sapphire Production routine is available for DKD alumni, current parents, and students aged 7 years and older! This performance will involve various sections appearing on and off stage to form a cohesive “production” and commemorate our Sapphire Jubilee!

Información del considerando 2025
Being a Stage Mom is one of the most important roles at our recital. All classes will need at least one “stage mom”. We ask for studio moms to volunteer due to their experience with children of the class’s specific age, and to help dancers feel more comfortable with a friendly face.
