Your Child’s First Dance Class: What Parents Can Expect
Trying something new is exciting, but when it comes to your child’s first dance class, it’s completely normal to have a few questions.
What should they wear? Do they need dance shoes? What if they’re shy? What will they actually do during class?
Whether your little one has been dancing around the living room for years or this is their very first organized activity, knowing what to expect can make that first trip to the dance studio easier for everyone.
Here’s a peek at what that first dance class can look like at Dorothy Keck Dancers.
Before Class: Keep It Simple
You don’t need a closet full of dancewear before your child has even taken their first class.
For a trial class, comfortable clothing that allows your child to move is a great place to start. Depending on the class, loaner shoes may also be available, so don’t let not having the “right” dance shoes keep your child from trying!
Once you find the class they love, our team can help you with the appropriate attire and shoes they’ll need.
Arriving at the Studio
For younger dancers especially, arriving a few minutes early can make a big difference.
It gives your child a chance to see the studio, get comfortable with their surroundings, meet their teacher, and settle in before class begins.
Some children will run into the room ready to go.
Others might need a little extra time.
Both are okay!
Our teachers know that walking into a new class can feel like a big moment for a little dancer.
What Happens During Dance Class?
Every class looks a little different depending on the dancer’s age and the style they’re taking.
For our youngest students, classes introduce movement and dance concepts in an age-appropriate way while helping dancers learn how to participate in a class setting.
As dancers get older, classes begin incorporating more technique, terminology, combinations, choreography, and style-specific skills.
But there’s one thing we want dancers of every age to experience: Learning and fun can happen at the same time.
What If My Child Is Shy?
This is one of the biggest worries we hear from parents of younger dancers.
A child who happily dances all over the house may suddenly become very quiet when they walk into a room they’ve never seen before.
Give them time.
Sometimes the first class is about participating. Sometimes it’s about observing, getting comfortable, and realizing, “Hey, I think I could do this!”
Confidence doesn’t have to happen the second they walk through the door.
It’s something we get to help them build.
What If They’ve Never Danced Before?
Perfect.
Really!
Beginner classes are designed for dancers who are still learning. Your child doesn’t need to know dance terminology, positions, steps, or choreography before they arrive.
That’s what class is for.
Our teachers meet dancers where they are and help them build their skills from there.
How Do I Know If It’s the Right Class?
After class, ask your dancer simple questions:
“What was your favorite part?”
“Did you like the music?”
“Would you like to come back?”
Their answers can tell you a lot.
And sometimes the first style you try isn’t the one. A dancer who isn’t excited about ballet might light up in hip hop. Another child may discover that they love making sounds in tap or learning tricks in tumbling.
Finding the right class is about finding the place where your child’s personality, interests, and movement style click.
It’s Okay to Try!
Your child’s first dance class doesn’t have to be the beginning of a professional dance career.
It can simply be the beginning of something they enjoy.
A place to move.
A place to learn.
A place to make friends.
And maybe, eventually, a place that feels a little like home.
