Recital Prep: Choosing Music, Costumes & Family Roles
Recital season is one of the most exciting times of the year at Dorothy Keck Dancers! It’s when hard work meets the spotlight, confidence shines, and families come together to celebrate their dancer’s growth.
If you’re wondering what goes into dance recital preparation, from choosing recital music to selecting costumes and organizing family roles, here’s your behind-the-scenes guide to making it a smooth (and joyful!) experience.
🎵 Choosing the Right Recital Music
Music sets the tone for every performance. It influences choreography, costumes, and the overall feeling of the piece. Selecting the right dance recital music is an intentional process designed to support both skill development and stage confidence.
Here’s what we consider:
✨ Age-Appropriate Selections
Songs are carefully chosen to be suitable in theme, lyrics, and style for each age group. We also consider what our dancers will connect too…Whether that be a favorite artist, movie, or show.
✨ Skill Level & Technique
Music tempo and complexity align with the dancers’ training level. We aim to challenge students while helping them feel confident performing on stage.
✨ Variety for an Engaging Show
A strong dance recital includes a mix of dance styles. We included all our studio has to offer: ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, contemporary/lyrical, musical theater, acrobatics, and more to keep the audience energized.
Parent Support Tip:
Play recital songs at home! Repetition builds confidence, strengthens memory, and helps dancers connect emotionally to their performance.
👗 Dance Recital Costumes
Dance recital costumes do more than sparkle under stage lights; they help dancers step into character and feel performance-ready.
When selecting costumes, we prioritize:
🌟 Ordering & Fit
Each dancer is measured and fitted into each of their costumes with each company’s size chart. We consider growth, style elements, and costume cut when ordering each student’s costume.
🌟 Style Alignment
Flowing fabrics for lyrical, bold designs for hip hop, classic tutus for ballet, costumes reflect the routine style, choreography, and technique.
🌟 Age Appropriateness
Designs are chosen with their age group in mind, and what looks to be best for their comfort and confidence.
🌟 Stage Practicality
Quick changes, lighting, durability, and backstage logistics are always considered. Each show is carefully crafted with quick changes in mind. We bring our own backdrops and additional lighting to the theater to create the best production possible.
